EA Seminar Series

The Knowledge Base

This seminar is an overview of the organization of the knowledge base as it is described in The Skillful Teacher (Saphier, Haley-Speca, & Gower, 2018) text. Participants will develop an understanding of and be able to apply three key concepts (area of performance, repertoire, and matching) as they apply to the study of teaching. Participants will also build a repertoire of ways to summarize students' learning and develop criteria they could use to determine which summarizers would make the best matches for particular learning experiences.

Developing Cultural Proficiency

Participants will continue to develop cultural proficiency in the context of our schools and classrooms by examining beliefs about teacher knowledge and skills, about the learning environment we create, and about teacher efficacy. We will define culture and identify the role culture plays in our lives and the lives of our students. We will also discuss five principles that are the beliefs from which culturally proficient behavior emerges.

High Expectations: Growth Mindset

In this seminar we will examine the difference between fixed mindset and growth mindset beliefs and how these beliefs impact student achievement. We will also consider how our beliefs about ability affect the messages we send to students about their capacity to learn. We will identify ways to encourage and reinforce growth mindset through the language we use, modeling, and explicit instruction, in both growth mindset and related brain research.

High Expectations: Standards, Expectations, and Effective Effort

In this seminar we will define standards and expectations and how each impacts the learning environment we create. The goal is to create an environment where students feel safe and have the confidence to take risks and make mistakes. We will also explore the importance of explicitly teaching the six elements of effective effort so that students have the tools they need to achieve at high levels.
