About Us

Legacies is a project funded by a Teaching American History grant awarded to the Lane Education Service District by the United States Department of Education. This is the third Teaching American History grant awarded to the ESD, and will run from 2008 to 2011.

Past grants have focused on high-quality professional development in the areas of American history content and pedagogy. Participants have had the opportunity to interact with historians in content seminars, attend workshops presented by education experts, and work with local history museums. The results of these activities include instructional units available to all educators, and history education products used to engage students in learning American history.

The Legacies project will build on the successes of the previous grants. Knowledge of American history will be emphasized along with ways to engage students, including historical inquiry and the use of local history as a “window” to learning American history. Participants will partner with local museums to develop and create history education products that will excite students about learning history and that will endure long after this grant has concluded.
