Happy Friends Baking Company
Lane Education Service District’s Life Skills Education Program serves over 300 special needs students each year. The goal of Happy Friends Baking Company is to assist students in gaining valuable vocational training through participation in the operation of a small baking business.
Initial funding for this student enterprise was provided through a Youth in Transition Program grant, Tommy Hilfiger Corporate Foundation grant, and the Lane Education Foundation. An expansion and enhancement of the program was provided through a Learn and Serve America grant. This grant has given students an opportunity to engage in a meaningful community service project. Students produce and distribute over 430 breakfast bars for adults and families in Lane County experiencing hunger and food insecurity. Project partners are FOOD for Lane County and Oregon Department of Education.
At the Happy Friends Baking Company students experience the many steps it takes to run a business and the pride that accompanies success. They learn food preparation, cooking, operating cooking equipment, workplace cleanliness, customer service and teamwork. Students, ages 16-21, are members of student crews and are responsible for baking/kitchen work, packaging and labeling, shopping, laundry, delivery and direct sales.
