Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a team-based process utilizing research-validated instruction and management practices to create safer and more effective schools. This systems approach to preventing and responding to classroom and school discipline problems enhances a schools capacity to educate all students. The process includes:

  • consistent guidelines and expectations
  • universally teaching students what is expected
  • well-developed feedback systems both positive and corrective
  • use of data to guide school improvement efforts.

Each school develops a system to address:

  • all students, staff and settings
  • common areas within the school
  • classrooms
  • individual student support for students exhibiting more challenging behavior
