Environmental Leadership Program (ELP)

AUDIENCE K-12, college, adults
DESCRIPTION The ELP provides innovative, hands-on learning opportunities to undergraduates at the University of Oregon. Housed in Environmental Studies, the ELP is a service-learning program that moves students from the classroom into the community. Our model is based on building community partnerships - so that our students are applying what they've been learning in the classroom to address real community needs. In 2006-07, we launched our Environmental Education Initiative. Our students first take an upper division science course pertaining to the ecosystem where they will work. In winter term they then take Environmental Education in Theory & Practice, where they start working in small teams of 4-8 students in collaboration with a community partner, to help provide/expand/develop environmental education and outreach in the community. Each partnership is unique, tailored to the location and needs of the community partner. Each student provides a minimum of 120 hours of service to their community partners. In exchange, we ask each community partner to contribute to the costs of running the project. While this is partly due to financial constraints (ELP is partially self-supported), we also find that this enhances the partnership. Given limited budgets, these teams can often be a very cost-effective way to increase your reach.
RESOURCES We can offer small teams of students, usually for spring term (but not limited to then), to help provide environmental education opportunities in our community. In the past they have developed interactive lesson plans and educational units linked to state standards, built websites, created podcasts for a virtual trail hike in HJ Andrews, developed professional posters to be presented at conferences, and led classroom and field trip activities.
SUBJECTS We have capacity to engage in all subject areas - depending on the need of our community partners.
