Southern Willamette Valley Project
This grant opportunity through the Oregon Department of Education provides a unique and historical opportunity for Lane County school districts to work with the Confederated Tribes of Siletz. The project will bring professional learning to teachers on pedagogy and available Native American curriculum for classroom use. This will bring together community members, tribes, K-12 educational leaders, higher education partners, Indian Education parent consortia, and early childhood providers to collaboratively work on each of the objectives of the grant. All students will benefit from this significant shift in teachers' experience in their knowledge, skills, understanding and cultural approach. Specifically, this shift aims at improving outcomes for achievement and indicators of success towards the 40-40-20 goal for Native students.
The goals of the grant are:
- To develop a three-credit graduate level university course that will be offered to Lane County teachers
- Whole-day and half-day professional development offerings
- The development of three traveling trunks aligned to the common core and state standards. The Confederated Tribes of Siletz and the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde will provide two of the traveling trunks. With the coordination of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz, a third traveling trunk will be the contributions of the nine Federally Recognized Tribes in Oregon.
The development of materials will be available for all immediate and affiliate partners to take back to their communities. Educational partners will have access and can request materials from the Springfield Native Youth Center at anytime. The Native Youth Center will disseminate the teaching, learning and training materials to reach the overall goal of long-term improved teaching and learning for Native students in Lane County.
Once these goals have been completed watch for announcements regarding the course and professional development offerings.
