Teacher training model becomes self-sufficient
Career and Technical Education (CTE) took a giant leap forward in August at Lane ESD. A team of local facilitators lead culinary arts instructors from around Oregon in the first Math In CTE professional development in the nation — without the assistance of the National Research Center for CTE, who introduced the model! Math-in-CTE's professional development and teacher leadership model pairs a CTE teacher with a high school math teacher to explicitly teach and reinforce math concepts in a given career field.
Lane County is in its third year of Math In CTE training and has developed the capacity to conduct this training with experienced local facilitators and teacher teams. Teacher teams assist with lesson demonstrations and assist in developing lessons through a "Table Captain" model. CTE areas covered include Manufacturing, CAD/Drafting, Business/Marketing, and now Culinary Arts.
As part of a regional roll out model, the Oregon Department of Education will support regions that designate a CTE area of focus, have an experienced facilitation team, and meet basic facility requirements.
The hope is multiple CTE areas will be covered each year and rotated around the state to increase participation.
